Modaks that are believed to have originated in the state of Maharashtra has different names like mothagam, kozhukattai, modhaka, kadubu in Kannada, kudumu among others and while the ingredients and the method of preparations slightly differ, the joy of eating them is just the same. 1. Traditional Steamed Modaks

Ingredients:

    • 1 cup rice flour
    • 1/2 cup jaggery (grated)
    • 2 tablespoons ghee (clarified butter)
    • 1/4 cup grated coconut
    • 1/4 teaspoon cardamom powder
    • A pinch of salt
    • Water, as needed

Instructions: 

    1. Heat ghee in a pan and add grated coconut. Sauté until it turns slightly golden.
    2. Add grated jaggery and let it melt, stirring continuously.
    3. Add cardamom powder and a pinch of salt. Mix well.
    4. Add rice flour and mix until it forms a dough-like consistency.
    5. Allow the mixture to cool, then grease your palms and shape the dough into small Modaks.

    • 1 cup all-purpose flour

    • Ghee or oil for frying

Instructions:

    1. Mix all-purpose flour, semolina, and a pinch of salt. Add water to make a stiff dough.

    1. In a pan, crumble khoya and cook it on low heat until it melts and becomes slightly brown.

    • 1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk

Instructions:

    1. Wash and blend the betel leaves to a fine paste.
    2. In a pan, combine the desiccated coconut, sweetened condensed milk, and betel leaf paste.

    4. Add gulkand, cardamom powder, and chopped nuts (if using). Mix well.
